.:: Web Dictionary ::.

As we've been 'growing up' in a web world filled with freakish terms that we had no idea what they meant...we found alot of words that you need to know if you're gonna run a successful site...here are some of the one's that we've found:

A
Affiliate: Affiliation is like when you and another site advertise each other's website by putting each other's link button on each other's website XD If you want to affiliate with a website, first you will need to e-mail the owner of the site if they want to affiliate with you, putting their button up doesn't mean that you're affiliates. Your website will have to meet the requirements in order to become an affiliate with another website if they have any, so if they reject you, then it's probably that your site broke a rule or doesn't meet the requirement.

B
Bandwidth: Without bandwidth, a website will not run properly. Sometimes you might see that some websites are down because of they ran out of bandwidth. Your website will not show in the internet unless you purchase some more from your webhost or wait until it resets on a specific date; they usually resets from the beginning of every month. When looking for a webhost, make sure you see how much bandwidth they give you, 20 MB bandwidth *cough* may not last long, about a day or so (unless your site is very, very small). 500 MB is a good amount, anything over 100 MB is a good amount of bandwidth. The more visitors visit your site, the more bandwidth your site will use, so be sure to not waste it by refreshing a page over and over again.

Bytes: There are 4 types of bytes, Bytes (obviously) Megabytes (MB) Gigabytes (GB) and Terabyte (TB) with bytes being the smallest and Terabyte being the biggest. Many free webhosting offers 1 MB - 500 MB, rarely do they give out 1 GB. There aren't many host that was known of that offers 1 TB for webspace, but there is one that gives out 100 TB bandwidth, which is Orgfree, and yes, it is kinda unlimited bandwidth there XD

1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes
1 GB = 1,024 megabytes
1 TB = 1,024 gigabytes

C
Chatspeak: Chatspeak >:) not many people enjoy having to read random chatspeak from a person. Chatspeak is abbreviations for a certain word, ex: love = luv, lol = laughing out loud, u = you. Chatspeak might sounds cool, but many websites restrict it.

Copyright: When something is copyrighted to somebody, it belongs to that person. If you take something that is (c) to the original owner, you're stealing and you're breaking a law (Copyright Act of 1976)

CHMOD: "Change Mode" or "Change Permissions" of a web file. The Unix command and system call to change the access permissions of a named file. Each file (directory, device, etc.) has nine kinds of access which can be allowed or denied. Different permissions apply to the owner of the file, the members of the group the file belongs to, and all users. Each of these classes of user (owner, group and world) can have permission to read, write or execute the file. For example:

777 = All Access, owner, group and world will have all access to the file
644 = Group, world and owner can all read. Only owner have permission to Write
666 = Group, world and owner can all Read and Write
744 = Owner can Write, Execute and Read. Group and world can Read

The CHMOD command is often use for PHP scripted files but rarely HTML.

D
Direct Linking: Direct linking, not a very good thing. It is when you display and image from one website to another, it is also bandwidth theft. For example, you see an image from a website: http://www.website.com/image5.gif and you use that URL and put that in your website, you're direct linking that image from Website.com to your site. What to do instead of direct linking? Try uploading that image into your own browser, that's probably the only way you can prevent direct linking to that website. If you want to read more on direct linking and bandwidth theft, check out this neat article: BuffyGuide.

Domains: Domains are like www.mysite.com. When you buy them, you copyrighted them, nobody else will be able to take it. Domains usually costs around $8 - $100 per year depending on where you registered them. Try finding some cheap domain providers instead of those expensive ones. We recommend GoDaddy, they're very cheap and reliable.

F
Forums: Forums are basically a place where you can post messages and chat to other members. Remember to not give out too much personal information about yourself in a forum.

H
Hackers: Hackers are people who hack into computer systems, websites, webservers etc. Hackers have the ability to gain illegal access to private files or a computer network using their computer skills. Hacking is illegal so hackers will not tell you how to hack in public websites like forums...

Hot Linking: A connection between two files that automatically updates one whenever the other is updated.

HTML: Hyper Text Markup Language. HTML/HTM. All websites consist of HTML or some sort of web coding since it's the basic structure of a website. HTML starts with an HTML tag: <html> and end with a </html> tag.

O
Oekaki: Oekakis are places where you can draw and post your images so people can comment on it. Oekakis are free, all you need to do is register. The most popular Oekaki used is Oekaki Poteto and you can get it at Suteki.net for free.

S
Spam: Spamming is when you send one or multiple pointless e-mails, post a tons of posts in a forum with the same message; and the same goes for Oekakis and tagboards. Spamming might cause you to be suspended from a forum, Oekaki etc.

SSI: Side Server Includes. With SSI, you will only need to update one file instead of having to edit all of your pages. For example, your website has 40 pages, and you want the menus to be the same on each pages, you can use SSI. The SSI includes tag is <!--#include virtual="file.txt"-->

W
Webhosts: Webhosts are people who mantain your website and puts it into the www. They provide webspace, bandwidth and sometimes support scriptings like SSI, PHP, CGI etc. Look for webhosts that meet your needs, if you need SSI, look for those that support it. We would highly recommend this host Freewebs.
